Destinations - Jesuit Missions

Description

The Jesuit- Guarani Missions were implanted in the XVII and XVIII centuries in the South of the American continent, in a territory that nowadays belongs to Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. About 30 Villages were founded, and they are nowadays a Humanitary Patrimony. The Spanish Missions represented a way to colonize South America, to keep the conquered lands and to convert the indigenous- the Guaranis, about 150 thousand indians at those times. The Missions'ruins represent the inheritance of the mixed European and Guarani cultures, that originated the cultural roots of the "gauchos"- people from Rio Grande do Sul state.

Activities

Following the steps of the Jesuits and Guaranis, you can visit the Missions doing a walk through the ancient missionaire routes connecting the Jesuit Missions. During the walk- "Caminho das Missões"- the Missions Walk, apart from seeing the ruins and the beautiful southern landscape of Brazil, the pilgrimage can be the experience of a lifetime.
